Few people know that movie star and gay icon Carmen Miranda was actually born in Portugal but moved to Rio de Janeiro as a girl in 1909. She was a determined, self-perpetuated creation–a master at promoting her public self, which “she wore like a mask that could not be penetrated.” That she ultimately became the richest woman in America at one point in her career was a testament to her sheer will to succeed in show business. Carmen Miranda: Bananas Is My Business is a hit-and-miss, sometimes shabbily done “proto-documentary” about her childhood and stardom, enacted with the sort of faux seriousness that is at times embarrassingly inane. The real people in the film, including her cousin, actors Cesar Romero, Rita Moreno, and Alice Faye (who says simply, “She had magic”), and boyfriends from her youth (”She had eyes like the headlights on a car,” rus one) paint a portrait of a woman who, though effervescent on the surface, was haunted by criticism from home after she became “Americanized” and who endured a cold, loveless, physically abusive marriage. Miranda emerges as a Hollywood victim, for although she had everything she wanted, she was never given the studio’s blessing to escape from her image to pursu her tru musical talent. Sleeping pills, depression, and electroshock therapy followed, further indicating an underlying misery despite Miranda’s gleeful public expression that “bananas is my business.” Yet she never despised her famous alter ego–a Latin spitfire bombshell who wore a fruit basket on her head. Her death by a heart attack, which followed a collapse while dancing with Jimmy Durante, is unfortunately mismanaged in the film by director Helena Solberg. Miranda, who is still remembered by millions, hardly merits a bad reenactment of her lonely demise. It’s a shame this intriguing documentary (that is, when it sticks to the film clips and archival footage) feels compelled to inject such speculative contrivances, because Miranda’s life was fascinating of its own accord. –Paula Nechak

Basically it’s about:
Get Ready for Close Encounters of the Scooby Kind! A cosmic case of UFOs, intergalactic intrigu and out-of-this-world romance launches Scooby, Shaggy and the Mystery, Inc. kids into their most unearthly adventure ever! Stranded in a remote desert town, the gang soon discovers the place is crawling with flying saucer buffs, secretive scientists… and less-than-friendly extraterrestrials! Then, after being chased by aliens and beamed aboard a UFO, something even weirder happens to Shaggy and Scooby– they fall head-over-heels in love! As clus to the mystery of the alien invaders lead them from a top-secret government research base to a huge network of caves hidden under the town, our love-struck heroes join the rest of the gang in a race to crack a case that re-defines the term “far out!”

While I’ve watched Scooby-Doo! And the Alien Invaders a lot, it seems to never get old. I guess it’s one of my favorites. Jessica Lange is a social worker who falls for an abandoned newborn and breaks all the rules by bringing him home. Halle Berry is the homeless druggie who dumped the baby. One of the film’s best attributes is that it reveals everyone’s perspective, though much of the story is told from Berry’s point of view. Strung out on crack, Berry’s character thinks nothing of hiding her baby in a cardboard box near a dumpster before going off for a fix. We watch Berry painfully pull herself up out of the gutter and make a life for herself. She embraces decency and sobriety and becomes the person she might have always been had her childhood been different. After Lange and her amiable spouse (David Strathairn) have formed strong family ties with this difficult child, they find themselves fighting to keep him when Berry decides she wants Isaiah back. Naomi Foner’s clever script reveals a legal system that is as much a character in this painful story as the attorney (Samul L. Jackson) who takes on the case pro bono. Though the film ultimately flounders under a hesitant ending, Lange is such a dynamo that this tragic story still comes recommended. –Rochelle O’Gorman

Basically it’s about:
Ranking just behind the best of animator Don Bluth’s films (Anastasia and The Secret of NIMH), Thumbelina is a bubble-light version of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale. The finger-sized heroine goes about the old-fashioned trials of trying to find a good man, but the film is clever enough to make it endearing for the 3-6 set and more than passable for adult viewers. Barry Manilow provides much of the song score, which helps immensely. The ballad “Let Me Be Your Wings” is as good as Disney’s best. Carol Channing and Charo have a good ol’ time with their songs too. The voice of Thumbelina is none other than Jodi Benson, who gave voice to Ariel in Disney’s The Little Mermaid. –Doug Thomas
